Rays

by Robert Beveridge

The cat
lies on the grass beside the walkway
suffers the attention of humans
who would run a hand or two
over its black and white aloofness
then, discouraged, walk away.

One girl, no more than four
persisted, stroked the cat
cooed it words of no importance
turned away only
when called back into the theatre.

The cat jumped up
rubbed twice against her legs
then bounded off into the night.
